I've Tried

by Richard Jay Shelton

Ah, you say,
A better life?
A fancy home?
Money?
Social rank?
You can have it.
I’ve tried God knows
There
I go
Uncorking
Another bottle

Put me down:
A park bench,
Green grass,
An empty street.

I will sink…
Drowning in the deep of my bottle.

Richard Jay Shelton was born in 1946 on a navy base in Coronado, California, but has lived most of his life in Los Angeles. He is a successful artist whose work can be found in the Smithsonian and other museums throughout the country. He has been painting and writing for forty five years.
